About the Events
All of COMSCC's events are held at road course tracks in the Northeast USA and Southeast Canada.
For those unfamiliar, a road course track is a racing circuit which exhibits the types of turns,
straightaways, and changes of elevation that one might encounter while driving on public streets.
The turns can be left or right, tight or wide, banked with the turn, banked against the turn,
or not banked at all. The straights can be short or long, uphill, downhill, or flat. Road courses
are a lot more fun (in our humble opinion) than plain ovals, since there is a lot more going on
than just driving in circles.
In order to keep the fun quotient high and the risk/damage factor low, COMSCC does not hold races.
Each event weekend consists of a Driver's School (usually on Saturday) and Time Trials (usually on Sunday).
Driver's School
The Driver's School gives the student the opportunity to drive their street car on a race track under controlled conditions and the supervision of a qualified instructor. Each student attends two classroom sessions in addition to their track time. Students learn the concepts of the road racing sport, such as the meaning and use of flags, "the line", and most importantly; proper car control including cornering, acceleration, and braking techniques that benefit the student not only on the road course, but in emergency street situations as well. Time Trials
The Time Trial allows the student to "compete" against other students without the risks associated with wheel-to-wheel racing. A time trial is essentially a race against the clock. In a format similar to autocrossing, each participant makes timed runs around the track, and these times are compared against other drivers competing in similar types of vehicles. Finishing order is determined by lap times, with the lowest time being the "winner".
New students must be approved by an instructor before being allowed to Time Trial, since the student drives solo during a time trial. For this reason, new students should not expect to Time Trial at their first event. It is not uncommon for new students to attend several schools before being approved to go solo.
